👋 Hey, I’m Jen! I was born and raised in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Ever since I can remember, I always dreamt of moving abroad.
I dreamt of a better quality of life.
Especially better career opportunities, to live in a safe country, and to be openly queer.
I applied to hundreds of jobs from abroad and only got rejections.
When I got lucky, I received replies rejecting me.
Most of the time, I didn’t get any information about my application.
I felt frustrated.
It seemed my dream was getting further and further away.
Until…
One day, a German company replied to my application and invited me to an interview!
Yes! I finally had my shot!
I NEEDED to make this work.
I spent the next few days preparing for my interview.
I studied the company.
Watched videos online about interviewing, salary negotiation, and how to understand Germany’s work environment and contracts.
After a few rounds of interviews I waited nervously for the company’s decision.
It felt like years went by!
One summer afternoon, as I was sitting at a beer garden with some friends, I got a phone call.
“We would like to welcome you to our team” said the voice on the other side.
Minutes later I got my first German job offer in my inbox:
I could not believe it!
I got teary eyes — my dream had come true!
After a lengthy bureaucratic process, I got my work visa to move to Germany!
My new chapter in life started.
LITTLE DID I KNOW…
This first job was my one struck of luck!
I had an amazing experience working at my first company in Germany.
The role I landed was as a customer service representative for the Spanish-speaking market—it felt like the job was tailor-made for me.
But after a few years, I started craving growth and new challenges. I wanted to transition into other positions and take on something more ambitious.
When I began my job hunt again, I encountered countless rejections.
Even more frustrating, I didn’t meet the requirements for most of the English-speaking job opportunities in Germany.
During my continuous job hunt I realized that there was one job almost every company was looking for — a software developer.
I always wanted to learn to code.
So, in 2015, I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I started to learn to code during my free time.
With these new skills, I was confident I was going to nail jobs in no time.
Boy, was I wrong!
I applied to over 100 companies, and no one ever replied.
Not even a ‘thank you.’ I was shocked!
I qualified for the jobs. But I wasn’t getting ANY interviews.
I followed generic advice from YouTube and other websites on how to craft my application to stand out.
But they were not doing the trick…
How could this be? I was back at square one! 😕
UNTIL…
I cracked the code of the German job market for good!
With all the rejections I was getting, I knew I had to change something.
I needed help. And as it often happens in life, the help I needed was right in front of my nose.
My breakthrough happened when I reviewed my application with a German hiring manager (who happens to be my wife and co-founder of Simple Germany😅).
Suddenly, it all clicked!
I was not adapting my job hunt strategy to the German job market!
We tweaked my applications and things started to change.
I started to receive replies!
I got my first job as a developer in 2016 🎉.
After that, my job applications were a breeze.
Mainly because I had understood the mindset and strategies required to stand out in the German job market.
I had interviews at top-tier companies like trivago, Vodafone, and Shopify.
I felt like I had a superpower. Every company I applied to replied with an interview invitation.
Suddenly, I was getting the jobs I wanted! 🤯

After launching Simple Germany, Yvonne and I began receiving countless questions from other internationals who also had the dream to come and work in Germany:
