HOW I FOUND MY FIRST HOME IN GERMANY
My dream had come true, but then reality hit: ‘I need a home!’
👋 Hey, I’m Jen! I was born and raised in Guatemala.
In 2012, one of my biggest dreams came true!
I had received a work contract froma a German company. I could finally move to Germany!
I had dreamed of this day for many years.
And finally, the time had come!
As I was preparing the paperwork for the German embassy to process my visa, it hit me.
Damn, I need a home!
I reached out to the company that had hired me. Luckily they knew a landlord who had a few apartments in the city I was moving to. And even luckier for me, some of the rooms were available in these shared apartments.
So, I applied for one and that’s how I got my first home in Germany.
It was a 12 sqm room. It wasn’t anything fancy. But I had a warm bed and that’s what mattered to me!
AFTER THE HONEYMOON PHASE…
I was unhappy, but too scared to move…
I lived in that tiny room for 2 years. Way more than I would have wanted to.
After the honeymoon phase of moving to a new country had worn off I realized I was paying way too much money for the state and size of my room.
But, to be honest, I did not know where to start to look for an apartment or how the process went.
I was scared.
I was scared because I did not understand how the German rental contract worked.
I did not know what documents were required, how to understand my contract, what was legal or not….
Without knowledge — tasks like finding a new home can seem super overwhelming!
Things changed when…
In 2014, I met Yvonne — who is German and now my wife and co-founder of Simple Germany.
After we dated for some time, we realized that we really loved each other!
So, I moved in with her into her flat.
So that process also went super smooth! 😅
It was such a quirky and lovely place!
BUT THEN…
We packed up and moved!
After 6 years of living in our beautiful home, we started Simple Germany.
Yvonne and I wanted to share all of her insights as a German and my experience as an immigrant to help other internationals settle into life in Germany more smoothly!
So, our home became our office and studio.
After 2 years of working from home, we realized something important: our apartment just wasn’t meeting our needs anymore.
It was too small, and we needed more space to live and work comfortably.
So, Yvonne and I started our apartment hunt.
We gathered all of our documents, created our Immoscout24 profile and started to apply for apartment viewings.
After a month and a half and around 6 apartment viewings, we had found our new home!
In December 2022, we packed our stuff and moved into our new flat!
A REALIZATION
I got reminded of how it feels to be a newcomer!
Going through the moving process together with Yvonne reminded me of how difficult the process could feel to a newcomer.
And to reinforce this feeling, a few weeks after we had successfully moved into our new home, we got contacted by a Brazilian couple in Düsseldorf.
They reached out to us and asked for our help.
They were renting a short-term apartment and wanted to get a long-term apartment.
They were unsure on how to proceed and needed some guidance.
Especially because they had a dog.
We had a 1:1 call and answered their questions.
With the motivation and strategies they got from our call, they started their apartment hunt.
After just 3 weeks they had found a dog-friendly apartment!
The apartment even had a garden for the dog to run around freely!
That experience and other messages we’ve received from our community inspired Yvonne and I to sit down and write EVERYTHING that we know about navigating the German rental market.
